Here is a fabulous and rare, all original King Seiko KS Special Chronometer from 1971. The silver sunburst dial is in excellent condition, with steel Seiko and KS logos and barely any marks. It has steel strip hour markers with black contrast, double at 12 o’clock. The tapered dauphine hands with black contrast stripes down the middle are in very fine condition with a few marks visible under close inspection. The hack stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out to set the time. The steel framed window at 3 o’clock displays the quick-set date and weekday. The weekday is in Kanji and English with blue lettering for Saturday and red for Sunday. Note that the quick-set of the date winds the movement at the same time. The quick-set should only be used with the hands at the bottom half of the dial.
The stainless steel bezel is in fine condition with some overall wear, perhaps most pronounced at around 5, 6 and 12 o’clock. The heavy stainless steel C-shape case with the original KS crown and integrated lugs is in fine condition, with sharp angles and facets and some overall wear, most notable at the top lugs . The brushed stainless steel case back is in very fine condition with light wear.
The watch comes on an after market leather strap and buckle of good quality.
Inside the watch, Seiko’s high grade 5246A movement beats strongly and accurately to within about +-12 seconds per day. The watch was fully serviced in September 2023 and comes with a 12 month warranty on its proper mechanical functioning.
The KS Special was named so because the engineers figured it might be the last mechanical watch they ever made, in the face of a quartz revolution. This watch sits perfectly on the wrist with its chunky case and beautiful dial. It is great as a daily driver or as part of a regular rotation schedule.
