Here is a fabulous, all original Grand Seiko GS61 from 1970. The silver sunburst dial is in fine condition, with steel Seiko and GS logos and faceted steel bar hour markers with black contrast, double at 12 o’clock. There are some very subtle nearly vertical stripes on the left side of dial, only visible under magnification. There are also a few tiny marks to the left of the GS logo and around the 1 and 9 hour markers. The tapered dauphine hands are in very fine condition, with central stripes of black paint and the characteristic seconds hand without a central hole. The steel framed window at 3 o’clock displays the quick-set date and weekday. The weekday can be semi quick-set by first turning the hands so it changes and then backwards to 23:00 and then forward so it changes again. The hack stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out to set the time, so the time can be set more accurately.

The stainless steel bezel is in fine condition with some overall wear, such as at around the 1, 5 and 8 hour markers. The angular stainless steel case with the original GS crown and embedded lugs is in fine condition, with a brushed face and polished sides. It shows some overall wear throughout, mostly towards the lugs and along the sharp edges. The stainless steel case back has a somewhat worn gold GS medallion and is in fine condition with some overall wear. The case does not appear to ever have been polished.

The watch comes on an after market leather strap and buckle of good quality.

Inside the watch, Seiko’s high grade 6146A movement beats at the then insane speed of 36,000 bhp. It runs accurately to within about +-10 seconds per day. The watch was fully serviced in May 2026 and comes with a 12 month warranty on its proper mechanical functioning.

This is a wonderful example of the beauty and quality Seiko produced with their groundbreaking efforts in the 60’s and 70’s. The watch looks great on the wrist with its large size and good condition and is a wonderful addition to any vintage collection.
